On 2 March 1836, the Republic of Texas formally declared its independence from Mexico at Washington-on-the-Brazos. The republic had a difficult early life. Financing proved critical, and efforts to secure loans from foreign countries were unsuccessful. There were raids from Mexico and attacks by Indians. Texas formed the Texas Rangers to ride long distances quickly to maintain order.
